Outnumbered and outgunned, the Ukrainians are forced to withdraw to friendly lines. This is thought to be the first firefight in the ongoing Battle for Kharkiv. Putin launched the surprise assault on May 10, capturing towns close to the border. Analysts believe the attack is a diversion, and not aimed at taking Kharkiv. The aim is to draw Ukrainian troops away from battlefields in the Donbas, which Russia is still trying to capture in its entirety and Putin says is the goal of his ‘special military operation’.

The Russian score a hit in return, but it fails to damage the tank which carries on firing. Once the attack has stopped, the Russian decide they’ve had enough and flee their position. That allows an assault squad of the 63rd Brigade to rush in and capture it. More video captured another unorthodox tactic used to weaken the Russian lines. The Russian were using a well-prepared trench system to attack Ukrainian units. So the Ukrainians drone a ground drone strapped with explosives into it. Once the drone was in position above one of the bunkers it exploded, making a crater in the ground. Fighting has been ongoing in the Serebryansky Forest since the start of the year. Russia is attempting to gain ground for what many fear would be an assault on Kharkiv city. #russia #ukraine #war

It then drives very close to the Russian trench to rescue a third wounded man lying on the ground. Dramatic video captures him crawling towards the vehicle before his comrades rush to help him. Once he is on board, the Bradley drives the three men safely off the battlefield. Ukraine is now set to get more of the vehicles after the US passed its latest military aid packed. At least 12 of the vehicles were seen being loaded on to the back of trucks in Rzeszow, Poland. Three short clips show black drones with arrow-shaped wings flying fast over the Russian region which sits on the Ukrainian border, accompanied by the sound of a jet engine. It is not clear whether these craft struck anything or were just being tested. If deployed in combat, it is likely the jet drones would be used for strikes deep inside Russia targeting key oil refineries which pay for Putin’s war and weapons factories that supply his troops. Ukraine has used a huge range of drones to attack these sites already, including one last week that seemed to be based on a Cessna or similar light aircraft. Kyiv’s aim is to wear down Russia’s ability to fight while it regenerates its own military after the failed counter-offensive last year that has seen Western assistance dry up.

Ukraine is pioneering the use of drones of all kinds – air, land and sea – as it looks for ways to counter Russia’s huge war machine on a budget and without risking the lives of its men. It is unclear whether the vehicles were sent in alone or as part of a bigger assault using troops and other vehicle. Both were disabled and then blown up using FPV drones. The 47th said this was an isolated incident, but it is likely that more of these vehicles will be spotted on the frontlines soon as both sides look for ways to cut down on casualties while inflicting damage on the enemy.

Two brigades – the 25th Airborne and 53rd Mechanised – have documented the carnage in a series of videos, revealing the destruction of at least one T-80BVM tank, two tanks with mine trawlers attached, and one BMP-2 armoured vehicle which the Russians threw at their lines. Tonenke is located to the west of Avdiivka, the city which Russia captured back in April, and is being heavily contested as Putin’s men try to continue their push into Donetsk Oblast and the Ukrainians try to stop them. Russia is thought to have lost tens of thousands of troops and hundreds of tanks on the Avdiivka front since October last year, and is now on the verge of mobilising more Russians into the army to make up for the losses.
