Unseen footage released by Ukraine’s security service shows Kyiv’s forces retaking a key Black Sea outpost from Russia in June 2022. First-person video shows Ukrainian soldiers approaching the Island onboard a helicopter. They attack with heavy machine gunfire as huge explosions can be seen from above. The squad exit the helicopter and storm Snake Island with heavy fire, aiming for Putin’s men. Moscow’s fighters had targeted Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, in the opening hours of the invasion effort beginning on February 24, 2022. Russia initially succeeded in capturing the outpost, but Ukraine drove them back. Four months into the war the island had become untenable and the Russians fled.
