The IDF’s 162nd ‘Steel Formation’ Division has rolled into Rafah on a mission to wipe out Hamas. Night-vision drone footage showed dozens of Merkava tanks, Namer fighting vehicles, and Puma armoured engineering vehicles moving into the southern Gazan city on May 8. The IDF said the vehicles were used to seize the crossing between Rafah and Egypt and take out 30 militants who opened fire on them during the operation. ‘Terrorist infrastructure’ and ‘suspicious buildings’ identified by the division were also blown up. Israel has sent troops into Rafah despite the protests of allies like the US, with Joe Biden threatening to stop sending weapons if the operation goes ahead.
Rafah is currently housing more than 1million Palestinians displaced from elsewhere in the strip, and there are fears they will get caught in the crossfire. But Israel says the attack needs to go ahead to ensure Hamas is wiped out.
