Drones are now battling other drones in the skies over Ukraine. Videos captured by both the Ukrainians and Russians show the fighting. In two similar pieces of footage, the Ukrainians chase down Russian Zala spy drones using their own FPV craft. In both cases, the faster FPV drone was able to identify the Zala drone providing Russian troops footage of the battlefield and catch up to it.
Once in position, the FPV drone hit the Zala and exploded. Another piece of Russian footage shows a grenade-dropping drone taking out a Ukrainian ‘Baba Yaga’ drone. A grenade hits the propellers of the Baba Yaga, causing it to crash. A fourth piece of footage shows a Russian Orlan drone being hit.
Again, a faster Ukrainian FPV hits it and explodes. The Ukraine war has revolutionised drone warfare.
Before the war, drones were large and expensive craft that were used for spying and raining missiles down on the battlefield, like the US Reaper. But the introduction of highly manoeuvrable combined with FPV goggles that allow precision piloting have turned them into cheap precision munitions.
