President Donald Trump facilitated a prisoner exchange, securing the release of an American teacher from Russian custody in exchange for a Russian national accused of money laundering.

Alexander Vinnik, 42, was linked to the 2016 Russian election interference in the U.S. and had been charged in 2017 for operating BTC-e, a cryptocurrency exchange allegedly used for laundering over $4 billion from criminal activities. Arrested in Greece and later extradited to the U.S., he was sent back to Russia on Wednesday.

Marc Fogel, imprisoned in Russia for three years on drug charges, returned to the U.S. on Tuesday night, calling Trump a “hero” and expressing deep gratitude for his release.
