A senior commander of an Iran-backed militia has been killed in an American airstrike on the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. Abu Baqir Al-Saadi died along with two others when his car was hit by a US missile late on February 7. America said Al-Saadi planned a drone strike in nearby Jordan which killed three of its soldiers and injured dozens of others on January 29. Al-Saadi was a senior commander with Kataib Hezbollah, part of the Iran-backed Popular Resistance Forces which operate across Iraq and Syria. He was known as known as the group’s director of operations within Syria. It comes as the ongoing war in Gaza threatens to drag the whole of the Middle East into a much wider and bloodier conflict, and drag American forces back into the region.
