North Korea has test-fired a hypersonic nuclear weapon for the first time as delighted dictator Kim Jong-un watched from the sidelines. Korean Central Television, the Hermit Kingdom’s propaganda arm, put out video of the launch which involved a Hwasong-16B intermediate range ballistic missile with a hypersonic glide vehicle fitted to the nose. North Korea claims the missile used solid fuel, which makes it easier to store and quicker to deploy, while the hypersonic tip can theoretically be fitted with a nuke and is designed to evade current missile defences. North Korea’s missile technology has improved rapidly since Kim signed a defence pact with Vladimir Putin to supply shells for the war in Ukraine, raising suspicions that Kim asked for help with his nuclear programme in return.
