Iranian air defences opened fire overnight after what was believed to be an Israeli attack on two military sites using drones. Flashes could be seen in the sky over Isfahan, a city in central Iran that houses a vital nuclear research facility, air base and weapons factories. Explosions were also reported at Tabriz, in the northern mountains, which houses long-range missile silos. Emergency services could be seen racing to the scene of the attacks overnight, but as day dawned the damage appeared slight or non-existent. The US confirmed overnight that the explosions were the result of an Israeli strike. Netanyahu’s government has so-far not commented. There was some confusion about the nature of the attack because of its apparently limited nature. Some suggested it was a mere demonstration – Israel showing Iran that it could hit some of its most sensitive sites if it chooses to, as a sign to back down. Others suggested it was a mere probing attack, designed to test Iranian air defence before a larger assault. It comes after Iran launched an unprecedented salvo of drones and missile at Israel in retaliation for an airstrike that killed a top general. The tit-for-tat is the closest the two mortal enemies have come to all-out war, raising fears of a conflagration that could burn large parts of the Middle East. #israel #hamas #war
