Moment hero policeman tries to save teenage girl from horrific car crash in LA
Police bodycam footage shows the distressing moment a 16-year-old girl was killed following a horrifying car crash in Los Angeles. Destiny Villanueva died while joyriding with her 14-year-old friend who sped away from police when they tried to stop her, because the vehicle’s headlights were out. Surveillance footage taken just after midnight on February 20 reveals the moment the Toyota Camry hit a traffic pole at Balboa and Ventura Boulevard at high speed and burst into flames. Heroic officers raced to the teenagers’ rescue, broke the mangled car’s windows, pierced the airbag with a pocketknife and dragged out the driver and an 18-year-old in the front passenger seat. Police asked the teenagers whether they were the only two people in the vehicle and the driver told them ‘yes’. But moments later, she changed her story and revealed Destiny was still trapped in the backseat. Police bodycam footage showed officers running back to the vehicle and trying to pull Destiny out, but it was too late. The car was quickly engulfed in flames and Destiny was killed. Responding firefighters found her body in the backseat, wedged under the driver’s seat. The driver and surviving passenger escaped with minor injuries, and Police confirmed the driver ‘did not display any sign of impairment’ after the collision.
