Russia has resorted to using motorbikes to attack Ukrainian forces near Bakhmut after thousands of tanks and armoured vehicles were destroyed in heavy fighting. Troops of the Zarya Battalion, the personal guard of the head of the ‘Luhansk People’s Republic’, were filmed riding the bikes into battle on April 9. Russian state media also interviewed the new motorbike assault troops, who showed off their vehicles for the cameras. The Zarya Battalion claimed the tactic was a success, but it has met with disaster elsewhere. To the south of Bakhmut, in Andriivka, Ukraine’s 92nd Brigade showed off footage of a pile of burning Russian motorbikes after an attack there failed. Grenade-dropping drones were used to destroy the bikes, and while the fate of their riders is unknown it is unlikely they made it very far. The motorbikes appeared in battle after Russia took heavy losses of tanks and armoured vehicles in the battle for Avdiivka. Around 700 vehicles were lost in that fight, forcing Putin’s men to look for alternative ways to get their comrades into battle. #russia #ukraine #war
